How to read the code on a battery

Those letters and numbers aren’t random. Once you know the pattern, you can tell the size and type at a glance.

Esta página solo está en inglés por ahora.

1. Find the code

Look on the flat side of a coin or button battery, or along the side of a stick battery. You may need a torch and a magnifying glass for small ones.

2. The first letters tell you the type

CR means a 3-volt lithium coin. LR means a 1.5-volt alkaline button. SR means a silver watch battery. PR is a hearing aid battery.

3. The numbers tell you the size

In CR2032, “20” means 20 mm wide and “32” means 3.2 mm thick. So a CR2025 is just as wide but thinner.

4. Brands add their own names

DL2032 (Duracell) and ECR2032 (Energizer) are both just CR2032. AG13, A76 and 357 are other names for the LR44 size.
